In Thai Buddhist art, the lotus petal is one of the most frequently seen motifs especially adorning the bases of Buddha images or sacred sculptures with spiritual significance. Unlike the fully bloomed lotus, a budding lotus has yet to reveal its complete beauty. This quiet restraint becomes a powerful symbol of potential, purity, and readiness for enlightenment.
During the Ayutthaya and early Rattanakosin periods, budding lotus motifs were commonly found on ritual objects, royal regalia, and at times even on jewelry—especially rings intended for ceremonial use or as offerings within the royal court.
A Naga-like Shank: Enchantment of Protection and Cosmic Power
The ring shank designed in a spiral or serpentine form—resembling a naga or mythical serpent—has deep roots in symbolic traditions across India and Southeast Asia. In these cultures, the naga is a legendary being known for its role in protection, guardianship of Dharma, and the linkage between earthly and underworld realms. In Buddhist iconography, nagas often appear beneath the Buddha’s throne or surrounding scenes from His life story.
