When speaking of earrings, we find their presence across many cultures around the world—including in Thailand. Archaeological evidence suggests that ear piercing and the use of metal or stone ornaments have existed since prehistoric times. In Thailand, such practices date back to the Ban Chiang period, approximately 2,000–3,000 years ago.

In their earliest forms, Thai ear ornaments were typically simple “studs” or “dangling earrings,” crafted from bronze, gold, or semi-precious stones. Over time, especially during the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya periods, these designs evolved into more elaborate forms, particularly among the nobility and within royal courts. Earrings from these eras were often made of pure gold, intricately engraved, and adorned with gemstones in accordance with the artistic style of the period.

Dangling earrings with engraved Thai motifs became especially prominent during the mid to late Ayutthaya period, a time when royal goldsmiths mastered the art of creating delicate patterns such as kranok (flame motifs), floral vines, and prajam yam (geometric patterns). These designs are not only expressions of aesthetic beauty but also symbolic reflections of Thai beliefs—gracefulness, prosperity, and protection.

Gemstones such as rubies, sapphires, emeralds, and diamonds were commonly set into these earrings. Of these, the ruby—revered as the “King of Gemstones”—was especially favored. Symbolizing power, love, and good fortune, high-quality rubies were often chosen by artisans to be set as central stones or arranged into shimmering clusters that moved gracefully with the wearer, catching and reflecting the light in motion.
